Find out more about Lane4's High Performance Environment Model & Scan

Lane4's High Performance Environment (HPE) Scan is a diagnostic which measures the key factors that influence sustained individual, team and organisational performance.

The HPE Scan is underpinned by the HPE Model, which was developed as a government-funded project involving collaboration between Lane4 and the
Institute for the Psychology of Elite Performance at the University of Wales, Bangor. As such, the model draws together both recent research in the fields of organisational and sport psychology, and our unique expertise and experience in performance psychology.

HPE Factors

Performance Climate: Sustainable business performance depends on the extent to which organisations can focus on innovation, employee wellbeing, internal processes, and achievement of results. The focus given to these factors has been shown to predict bottom-line organisational performance in terms of productivity and profitability. (Patterson, West, Lawthom & Nickell, 1997)

Leadership: Leadership is at the core of the HPE model and is measured in terms of the Vision, Support and Challenge provided by leaders. This view of leadership is based on transformational leadership theory, which has been shown to lead to several positive outcomes for organisations including increased job satisfaction, commitment and performance.

Performance Enablers: At Lane4 we believe that leaders themselves cannot motivate people to perform. The strongest form of motivation comes from within, and as such, leaders must instead provide conditions in which employees feel self-motivated to perform to high levels. In the HPE Model these conditions take the form of performance enablers, which can be subdivided into the Information, Instruments and Incentives provided by the organisation.

People: Both the leadership and performance enablers provided influence the people working within the organisation. The key people factors for high performing organisations are Attitudes & Beliefs (trust in the leader, job satisfaction, organisational commitment, belief in the organisation's values, team confidence), Engagement, Extra-Role Behaviours and Team Behaviours. These people factors are important because it is the people that then deliver sustained personal, team and organisational performance.

Overall, the HPE Model has been used successfully as a consultancy and coaching tool. It makes sense intuitively, demonstrates the importance of looking at organisations holistically, and also details the critical factors for organisations serious about performance improvement.
