Thriving under Pressure - September breakfast event

6 September 2011

Business leaders and employees continue to bear ever more pressure as they deal with ambiguity, change, increased workload and tighter budgets. The consequences are well known with latest statistics showing that every year British businesses lose £26 billion in sickness absence and lost productivity.

Dr. Wil James (Principal Consultant, Lane4 and sport psychologist for England and GB Men's Hockey) drew upon recent Lane4 research to explore the impact of stress in the workplace and how well individuals are set up to cope with pressure. He was joined by Andy Halliday (GB Hockey Team Manager and former firearms specialist in the Metropolitan Police) who shared lessons from the highly pressurised worlds of elite sport and CO19 Specialist Firearms Operations.

In particular, they explored:

  • How individuals can maximise their performance when faced with high pressure situations
  • Habits which help prevent the negative psychological & physiological effects of accumulative stress
  • The role of leaders in helping others to proactively & reactively thrive under pressure
